A Clinical Study on Neuropsychiatric Patients Admitted Via the Emergency Room


Abstract
Hospital records of 154 neuropsychiatric patients admitted to Paik Hospital via the KR. from September 1, 1975 to August 31, 1978 were studied and the following results were obtained.
1. Patient admitted via the E.R. comprised 22.3% of total neuropspychiatric admissions.
2. The readmission rate of patients admitted via the E.R. was 22.0% which was higher than the readmission rate of 10.0% of patients admitted via the O.P.D.
3. The rate of emergency neuropsychiatric patients was only 2. 1% of total number of E.R. patients.
4. The average duration: of hospital ization of neuropsychiatric patients admitted via the E.R was 18.7 days which was shorter than the average duration of 27. 0 days for patients admitted via the O.P.D.
5. 54% of the emergency admission patients were in their twenties or thirties in age. Male to female ratio was 1.0 : 1. 3.
6. 27.3% of the patients were diagnosed as hysterical neurosis.
7. 63. 0% of the patients were discharged within 2 weeks.
8. More than half of the patients presented symptoms in order of anxiety and panic state, hallucinations and paranoid symptoms, and somatic symptoms and paralysis of extremities.
9. About 1/3 of the patients were discharged A.M.A. without satisfactory improvement of symptoms.
